LETTERS PATENT to Joseph Brazier, of Wolverhampton, in the County of Stafford, Manufacturer,. for the Invention of “An Improvement or Improvements in Revolving or Repeating Fire-arms,”
Sealed the 5th June 1855, and dated the 5th April 1855.
PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION left by the said Joseph Brazier at the Office of the Commissioners of Patents, with his Petition, on the 5th April 1855.
I, Joseph Brazier, of Wolverhampton, in the County of Stafford, Manufacturer, do hereby declare the nature of the said Invention for “ An Improvement or Improvements in Revolving or Repeating Fire-arms” to be as follows:—
My Invention consists in charging the revolving chambers of revolving or repeating fire-arms by means of a ramrod actuated in the manner illustrated in the Drawing, a is the ramrod, working in a slide b on the fixed barrel c; d is an arm turning upon the joint e; in the end dl of the arm d is a curved slot /, in which said slot the pin g engages. When the parts are in the positions represented, the end a1 of the ramrod a is external to the barrel h of the revolving chamber. When a charge has been introduced into the said barrel h, the arm d is raised into the position indicated in dotted lines at i. The several moving parts assume the positions indicated by dotted lines, and the end a1 of the ramrod a forces the charge into the barrel h. When not in use the arm d is held in its place by a spring catch k.
SPECIFICATION in pursuance of the conditions of the Letters Patent, filed by the said Joseph Brazier in the Great Seal Patent Office on the 2nd October 1855.
TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME, I, Joseph Brazier, of Wolverhampton, in the County of Stafford, Manufacturer, send greeting.
WHEREAS Her most Excellent Majesty Queen Victoria, by Her Letters Patent, bearing date the Fifth day of April, in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty-five, in the eighteenth year of Her reign, did, for Herself, Her heirs and successors, give and grant unto me, the said Joseph Brazier, Her special license that I, the said Joseph Brazier, my executors, administrators, and assigns, or such others as I, the said Joseph Brazier, my executors, administrators, and assigns, should at any time agree with, and no others, from time to time and at all times thereafter during the term therein expressed, should and lawfully might make, use, exercise, and vend, within the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and Ireland, the Channel Islands, and Isle of Man, an Invention for “ Ah Improvement or Improvements in Revolving or Repeating Fire-arms,** upon the condition (amongst others) that I, the said Joseph Brazier, by an instrument in writing under my hand and seal, should particularly describe and ascertain the nature of the said Invention, and in what manner the same was to be performed, and cause the same to be filed in the Great Seal Patent Office within six calendar months next and immediately after the date of the said Letters Patent.
NOW KNOW YE, that I, the said Joseph Brazier, do hereby declare the nature of the said Invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement thereof (that is to say):—
My Invention consists in attaching to revolving or repeating fire-arms the mechanism herein-after particularly described, and illustrated in the accompanying Drawing, for the purpose of charging or loading the said fire-arms.
Figure 1 represents, in side elevation, a revolving or repeating pistol constructed according to my Invention ; and Figure 2 represents a plan of a portion of the same, a, a\ is the ramrod, which said ramrod works in a slide or guide 6, fixed to the barrel c; d, d\ is an arm which turns upon a joint e on the barrel c; in the end d1 is a curved slot f; in the said slot/ a pin g engages, the said pin g being fixed to the end a of the ramrod a, a1. When the several parts described are in the positions represented in the Drawing, the end a1 of the ramrod is external to the barrel h (indicated in dotted lines) of the revolving chamber. When a charge has been introduced into the said revolving barrel h, the arm d is raised into the position represented by dotted lines at i. The end d1 of the arm d and the ramrod a, a1, also assume the positions indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1, and the end a1 of the ramrod forces the charge into the barrel h. By bringing the arm d into the position represented, the ramrod is withdrawn from the barrel Ji, and the other barrels of the revolving chamber may be charged by the method described with regard to the barrel h. When the arm d is not in use it is held in its place by a spring catch k, engaging in a notch l> represented in the raised arm i, Figure 1. Although I prefer placing the arm dy d1, and ramrod a, a\ in the positions represented, yet the said arm and ramrod may be placed underneath the barrel c, or in any other convenient position. Although I have only herein described and represented in the accompanying Drawing a pistol with the improvement or improvements constituting my Invention, yet my said Invention is applicable to all kinds of revolving and repeating fire-arms, and I believe my said Invention will be fully understood by the description I have given.
Having now described the nature of my said Invention, and the manner of carrying the same into effect, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details herein described, as the same may be varied without departing from the nature of my said Invention; but I claim as my Invention the improvement or improvements in revolving or repeating firearms herein described, and illustrated in the accompanying Drawing; that is to say, actuating the ramrods of the said fire-arms by the raising and lowering of an arm, with which said arm the ramrod is made to engage, by a pin on the end of the said ramrod entering a curved slot in the end of the said arm.
In witness whereof, I, the said Joseph Brazier, have hereunto set my hand and seal, this Twenty-ninth day of September, in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty-five.
JOSEPH BRAZIER. (l.s.)
Witness,
William Shoolbred.
