IMPROVEMENT IN REVOLVING FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,848, dated March 8, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, Ben. Kittredge, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists of a metal shield or plate inserted between the nipple and face of the cock in such a manner that when the arm is discharged the shield or plate will throw the fire from the nipple off in lateral direction and prevent its being thrown back into the lock, and in such a manner also that, whether the cock be down or up, it will tend to hold the cap or caps in place upon the nipple or nipples and prevent them from clogging the cylinder as it revolves.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct the shield or plate A (seen in Figure 2 of the drawings that accompany this specification) of steel or other metal, and insert it between the cylinder and recoil-plate in such a manner that the cock as it descends will press it against the nipple that is in front of the cock. This will allow the cap to be exploded the same as if the shield were not there, and will serve to compel the fire from the nipple to pass off laterally, instead of being thrown back and injected into the lock. It will also serve to keep cap in place upon the nipple, and to prevent the caps from working back so as to clog the cylinder as it revolves. The shield or plate may be fastened to the recoil plate by screws, as at B, or in any other manner.
I am aware that metal shields have been heretofore placed between the nipple and hammer; but they have been so made as to surround the nipple at the sides and rear, so as to prevent the fire from passing off laterally. While therefore I do not claim broadly the interposition of a shield between the cock and nipple,
I do claim as my invention—
A metal shield constructed substantially as described and placed between the cock and nipple to throw the fire laterally from the nipple.
