IMPROVEMENT IN RETRACTORS FOR REVOLVING FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,182, dated December 26, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS LEE, of the town of Westport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Fire-Arms, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the peculiar manner in which the retractor which draws the empty shell is attached to and worked by the hammer of the lock of a pistol or other fire-arm. The object of my invention is to withdraw the empty shell from such pistol or other fire-arm after it is discharged.
The drawing accompanying this specification is a sectional view of what is generally termed a navy pistol, showing the attachment of a curved tubular chamber or magazine, containing within the same a spiral spring, to a pistol or other fire-arm having a revolving cylindrical breech.
A is a curved tubular chamber or magazine, containing within the same a spiral spring, B, which, when elongated, is of equal length with said curved tubular chamber or magazine. This tubular chamber or magazine is attached to the barrel of the pistol or other fire-arm, and extends from the extreme end thereof, and runs along under the same, and curves around to the butt end of the stock or handle, and then continues up to the entrance of the cylinder of the revolving breech C.
The retractor a slides in the slot b, caused by a stud, c, working in the double slots of the vertical vibrating-arm or plate d. This vertical plate is attached to the stock by a pivot, e, and has an angular slot at the lower end for the stud f to work in to give a vertical and horizontal or eccentric movement to the same, caused by the action of the hammer, to which the stud f is attached.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is–
The retracting-bar a, stud c, double-slotted vibrating-arm d, stud f, and hammer, combined for operation as set forth.
