Patent: Franklin Wesson

United States Patent Office.
FRANKLIN WESSON, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 92,918, dated July 20, 1869.
IMPROVED COMBINED PISTOL AND DIRK.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANKLIN WESSON, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Combined Pistol and Dirk-Knife; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which—

Figure 1 represents a side view of a combined pistol and dirk-knife constructed according to my invention;

Figure 2 represents a horizontal section of the barrel of the same; and

Figure 3, a transverse section, taken in the line x x, fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

This invention consists in the arrangement of a dirk-knife to slide into and out of a sheath constructed between the bores of a two or more shot revolver, whereby an efficient weapon is produced.

Referring to the accompanying drawings—

A is the barrel of a double-shot revolving pistol, of the ordinary construction, except that sufficient space is left between its bores for a cylindrical sheath or socket, B.

Said cylindrical sheath or socket B is arranged between and parallel with the bores of the barrel A, and is designed for reception of a sliding dirk-knife C.

Said dirk-knife is provided, at its hilt, with a cylindrically-formed shoulder-block, C’, which is fitted so as to slide back and forth within the said sheath or socket B.

In one of the sides of this sheath or socket is formed a longitudinal slot, b, through which projects a spring-catch, c, of the said shoulder-block.

Said spring-catch c is preferably of a form as represented in fig. 2 of the drawing, but may be of any other form for effecting the purpose for which it is intended. It is pivoted within a slot formed in the said shoulder-block C’, and is actuated in an outward direction by a spring, s, arranged under it.

Said catch c is provided with rectangularly-extending studs or locking-projections e e, which, by the outward springing of the catch c, when the dirk is forced outward to its utmost extent, lock into recesses i i, formed in each side of the forward extremity of the slot b, thereby preventing the backward sliding of the same by the said locking of the parts.

The said dirk may be slid forward by a sliding pressure of the thumb upon the spring-catch c, until the hook or point of said catch reaches the end of the slot, or if may be extended suddenly by centrifugal force, it being stopped at the same point and by the same means as just described.

The dirk-knife C may be returned to its sheath at pleasure by any suitable backward force, by first pressing upon the said catch c until its locking-projections e e are disengaged from the recesses of the slot d.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is—

The combination of a dirk-knife, provided with a spring-catch, c, with a two or more barrel revolver, and arranged within a central sheath, substantially as described.

FRANKLIN WESSON.
