To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM. C. A. BULLOCK, of Meridian, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire Arms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in fire-arms, the object of the same being to provide a device whereby the cartridges in a revolving chamber shall be protected against exposure and dampness and the cylinder-bearings from dust.
With these ends in view my invention consists in providing the rear end of a gun or pistol barrel with a cylindrical cap adapted to receive the forward end of a cartridge cylinder which snugly fits and revolves in the said cap.
My invention further consists in certain other features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a gun with my improvement attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a section view of the same with the cartridge-cylinder removed from the cap.
A represents a gun or pistol barrel, pivotally secured to a stock, B, by means of a pivot, C. The said barrel is further secured to the stock by means of any desired spring catch or fastening at the point D. The said barrel A has formed or made integral therewith the circular cap E, which is provided with a perforation, F, located at the point where the bore of the gun encounters said cap. The flange or rim C of the said cap is adapted to receive the recessed or small end H of the cylinder I. The said cylinder is recessed or cut away, thus permitting it to snugly fit within the cap and rotate therein. The shoulder J of the cylinder, when in position for use, bears against the rim F, and thus prevents the entrance of dust and moisture into said cylinder, which is provided with chambers to receive a desired number of cartridges, and is movably secured to the barrel A by means of the axial front end, pin K, which passes through a longitudinal perforation in the cylinder I, adapted to receive the same; or it may be secured to the barrel in any other desired manner. The stock B is provided with semicircular plates L, which, together with the head B’ of the stock proper, forms a cylindrical bearing for the rear end of the cylinder when in position for use, and serves to provide against displacement of the cartridges located in the chamber of the cylinder, and also protects the cartridges from exposure. locked in position and operated in any desired or customary manner.
My improvement is particularly adaptable to shotguns provided with revolving cartridge holding cylinders, as the cartridges used in guns of this character are generally loaded by hand, and consequently are more susceptible to the action of the elements than rifle-cartridges, where the balls are usually greased and set tightly in metallic shells by machinery, thus rendering them comparatively waterproof. I do not, however, limit myself to this particular application; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is–
1. The combination, with a barrel having a cylindrical cap at its rear end, of a revolving cartridge-holding cylinder recessed about its forward end, and journaled to a pin projecting rearwardly from said barrel and secured at its said recess forming shoulders adapted to bear flush against the rim of the cap when in position, substantially as set forth.
2. In a gun, the combination, with a barrel having a cylindrical cap formed integral there with, of a revolving cartridge-holding cylinder recessed at its front end, said recess forming shoulders adapted to bear flush against the rim of the cap when in position, substantially as set forth.
